What I like about Locksley is that they’re not afraid to rock. While so many contemporary indie acts are turning inward, exploring buried vocals under waves of distortion and fuzz, this Brooklyn based act isn’t afraid to stick its delicious melodies and powerful hooks right in your face. Locksley maintains a crunchy, garage punk rock inspired palate, but also draws upon 60's British Invasion era influences. Think The Beatles meets The Hives.
Locksley’s music is the perfect soundtrack for MTV’s programs because it’s upbeat, fun and able to maintain an original edge. When I first heard Locksley I was intrigued by the retro elements in the band’s sound and generally blown away by the strong songwriting. All great music moments in Film & TV start with memorable and inspiring songs and Locksley definitely has many to choose from.
Locksley are a four-piece rock band out of Madison, WI who now call New York City home. Over the past few years as an unsigned act, they’ve built up an impressive, if not stunning, list of accomplishments. Among those are sales of over 60,000 albums worldwide, playing as the backing band for Kinks legend Ray Davies, performing on Jimmy Kimmel Live and Late Night with Conan O'Brien, and most recently, their first adds to top 40 radio for the song “The Whip”. Without the benefit of a major label marketing machine, fans have gravitated to Locksley’s infectious sound, which mixes 50’s rock ‘n’ roll with modern garage, coming off as what could be described as a more refined version of The Exploding Hearts or The Dirtbombs covering Buddy Holly & The Crickets.
Locksley also wins people over with their high-energy live sets. With Sam Bair anchoring the band on the drums, Kai Kennedy (Lead Guitar), Jesse Laz (Rhythm Guitar) and Jordan Laz (Bass) all switch off on lead vocals. They trade places on the center mic in a whirlwind spectacle that draws audiences in, keeps them guessing, and most importantly gets them moving.
Locksley met while growing up in Madison, WI as best friends, and brothers in the case of Jesse and Jordan. With the release of their self-titled album Locksley this summer, they finally have the poise and experience necessary to bring their band to new heights.
